Peter Vogt’s chapter book for young readers, THE MONSTER SHARK’S TOOTH, combines fantasy with fact in such an entertaining mix that the story has already become a favorite among second- to fifth-graders.
Eight-year-old Johann, who lives in Arizona, comes to visit his grandparents on the Chesapeake Bay in Southern Maryland. He’s always known that his Grumpa is special – for starters, the elderly man is a brilliant scientist who knows all about today’s natural environment, as well as everything, it seems, about the world as it existed eons ago. Johann looks forward to the fun of fishing and canoeing with Grumpa and learning a lot of new things about the Bay and marine life. What he particularly hopes to do, though, is find the fossilized tooth of a monster shark, the Megaladon, the huge and dangerous creature that millions of years ago terrorized the waters which Johann and Grumpa are now exploring.
Who knew that Grumpa had the key to time-travel up his sleeve? And when does an educational field trip become a terrifying struggle to stay alive?
Accurate in the wealth of information it contains about natural history, modern ecology, and the flora and fauna of the distant past, THE MONSTER SHARK’S TOOTH is illustrated by distinguished Chesapeake-area artist Timothy Scheirer. It includes a reading list and a glossary.
THE MONSTER SHARK’S TOOTH is at the heart of THE FOSSIL COLLECTOR’S STARTER KIT, a compact package of book, tips on fossil collecting, an illustrated sheet of Miocene molluscs to aid in shell identification, and a collector’s ruler from the Chesapeake Marine Museum’s Fossil Club (of Solomons, Maryland), with a guide to Miocene sharks’ teeth on one side and measurements for working with fossils in situ on the other side. As a special bonus and to get the young fossil collector off to a good start, each kit comes with two genuine Miocene-era fossil teeth. The young collector’s first task is to identify the different species of shark or ray from which the kit’s two teeth came! Every kit, of course, is different, and supplies are limited.

Peter Vogt is a marine geologist who has long researched what lies on and below the ocean floor, from ships in almost every ocean. During the many years he has lived next to the Calvert Cliffs and the Chesapeake Bay, Dr. Vogt has collected fossils and learned much about the Miocene sediments exposed in the cliffs. (However, he has yet to find a large Megalodon tooth.) Although the author has published more than 150 scientific papers and charts, THE MONSTER SHARK’S TOOTH is Dr. Vogt’s first work of fiction. He hopes in this and later books to use fiction to teach natural history to children of all ages.
