Q. Why choose a small publisher?
A. A small press tends to be less driven by big-bottom-line imperatives than a larger company. A small regional house like Barclay Bryan Press tends to work closely with its authors and illustrators, including them in every process of book production, and keeping their books in print – and hence available for sale – far longer than titles produced and marketed by large publishing companies.
Q. I am a writer and would like you to consider my book for publication. Should I send you a book proposal, some sample chapters, or the whole manuscript?
A. Send us a brief query letter first (see Contact), giving us a clear idea of your book: its genre, scope, and target audience, as well as any track record you have as a writer and any other information you feel is relevant. You should also append a brief sample from your book – the first chapter is conventional. If we like what you’ve sent us and think your work and Barclay Bryan Press might be a good fit, we’ll email or call you with instructions on the next step.
Q. I have written a children’s book. Do I need to find an illustrator and have pictures prepared before I contact you?
A. No. Most publishers of illustrated children’s books prefer to assign their own artists.
Q. I am an artist and would like to become a book illustrator. How do I get started?
A. Send us a brief query letter and a representative sample of your work, either electronically or in the mail (see Contact). We are always interested in adding talented illustrators to our staff of on-call freelancers.
Q. What is a “chapbook”?
A. Chapbooks are small, inexpensive paper editions of poetry or short fiction. In 16th century England, pocket-sized chapbooks were available in the marketplace and were secular, as opposed to sacred, in content (“chep” in Anglo Saxon means “market,” and is of course the origin of our word “cheap”). In modern times chapbooks tend to be short collections of poems.
